ABOUT Sonya Jones-Hughes

Sonya A. Jones-Hughes is a resident of Chesapeake, Virginia. Sonya is currently a Psychology PhD candidate at North central University. Sonya has earned her Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from South University and Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with specializations in Special Education and Psychology from Norfolk State University. Sonya is a thirty year veteran of the developmental services and behavioral health population working in various settings with all ages. She is a support partner of families of children receiving mental health services and has worked with young people as they transition into adulthood.
Sonya volunteers with the National Alliance on Mental Illness as a certified presenter of several programs that fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care for those affected by mental illness and their families. She is also a member of the Virginia Family Network Advisory Board, whose purpose it is to create a statewide network of families who support, educate, and empower other families with children and youth with mental health needs while also promoting family driven and youth-guided policy throughout the child serving systems. Lead by her faith first and foremost, Ms. Jones-Hughes is a licensed minister and serves in ministry at her church in Portsmouth, Virginia. The accomplishment of which Sonya is most proud is that of being the mother of her two adult children.
