ABOUT Karen James

Karen James holds a master’s degree in Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She is currently pursuing a second master’s in clinical Mental Health Counseling at Marywood University with the goal of pursuing LPC licensure upon completion of this degree. Working in various areas of the child welfare system allowed Karen to observe the difficulties that many individuals face when they are unable to receive appropriate mental health treatment. As a result, she was able to observe both children and adults struggling with the emotional pain caused from PTSD, anxiety, depression, abuse, and various other traumas, which brought about a deep desire in her to help individuals receive the best mental health care available to them. Karen’s experience includes using the Sanctuary Treatment Model and using the framework of S.E.L.F. to help individuals work through their trauma by focusing on their Safety, Emotions, Loss and Future. Karen provides empathy and unconditional positive regard to each client while collaborating with them to empower them in setting realistic treatment goals, re-framing negative thoughts, and practicing self-care. Karen strives to utilize her education and training to ensure that everyone, particularly those who are underserved, to have access to appropriate mental health treatment. In her free time, she enjoys just simply laying in her couch and watching sappy Hallmark romance movies, playing scrabble, and cooking various international dishes.

Take your time healing, as long as you want. Nobody else knows what you’ve been through. How could they know how long it will take to heal you? - Abertoli
